History

The Eagle Lake 100 was envisioned by local dog drivers and Can Am Crown race organizers. Maine races at this time lacked an early season training race and a stepping stone to the longer multi-stage race that included a checkpoint with a layover.

In the fall of 2004 the Eagle Lake 100 was born! The race was organized by local mushers Larry Murphy, Mary Wolf and John Kaleta. Chris Yule DVM organized the veterinary help. Bruce Labbe , Roy Rolff and Mark Berube worked hard developing and grooming the trails. Dianna Nadeau weaved the organization together with local businesses and the chamber of commerce. Dr. Paul Pelletier coordinated medical aide. Al Crisp and Dan Iamarino did (and continue to do so) a marvelous job grooming and sweeping the trails during the race! Sen. John Martin was (and still is) influential in finding and collaborating with our Key Sponsor, Irving Woodlands, and other sponsors. John’s generosity is also appreciated as he has graciously hosted the race at checkpoint at Moosepoint Camps on Fish River Lake. The Eagle Lake Fire Department provided needed in town and search and rescue support. The Fort Kent Community High School Key Club and numerous other volunteers helped out with race dog team support.

January 15-16, 2005. The first Irving Eagle Lake 100 was off and running with 16, 10 dog teams. Conditions were rock solid, solid ice that is! One inch of rain fell on the 14th followed by a deep freeze during the race (-20F). One driver froze his corneas but avoided permanent damage as Race Dr. Paul Pelletier administered treatment for the affected eye. Times were shockingly fast for the 100 mile course even without subtracting the 6 hour layover! Fish Lake also proved challenging as it was hard to direct teams on the frozen surface.

January 14-15,2006. The second Irving Eagle Lake 100 started with 15 teams and finished with 12. Rules changed from a six hour layover to a four hour layover and Tenly Benett entered the race organization as Race Director. Once again Mother Nature played a role with outlandish trail conditions as 2” of rain fell during the race. Trails held up remarkably well but streams overflowed their banks and Fish Lake resembled Fish Chowder! Many teams were escorted on foot by wading volunteers to get by slushy sections.

January 20-21, 2007. The third Irving Eagle Lake 100 saw several important changes, most importantly getting the trail off of Fish Lake! The field was also expanded to a maximum of 25 teams. 24 teams began the race but hellish winds and cold temperatures played with the minds of inexperienced and experienced drivers alike, causing six teams to scratch at Moosepoint Camps.
